In 2017, when newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron said, “I want France to be a startup nation,” his detractors used his phrase to mock him.
If anything, France was struggling to attract venture capital, with the annual number of investments into startups falling in 2016, lagging both the U.K. and Germany, according to data from Pitchbook.
I've gone through phases when it comes to buying used computer gear. Way back at the dawn of time, the only items I could afford were used. In fact, I couldn't even afford working computer gear, so I'd scavenge broken machines and combine parts to make them work. It was frustrating, highly educational, gave me confidence around the gear, and was the only way I was able to get my hands on what I needed.

As the iPhone 13 takes its place as the iPhone literally everyone should buy, the question still exists: Should I upgrade to the new iPhone, or should I keep my old one? To find out, I went back to a much older iPhone — the 2018 iPhone XR — for just over a week to see how well it would fare in 2021. Back when we reviewed it, we praised it as the “budget” iPhone to buy. This device was loaned to me by the folks at Backmarket, so it’s a refurb without all the dings and nicks that you’d have on an actively used phone.
Produced by Foundersuite (www.foundersuite.com), "How I Raised It" goes behind the scenes with startup founders who have raised capital. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is the technology that measures the distance from an object by illuminating it with a laser light. At the same time, by scanning the surrounding environment with a very narrow laser beam, a LiDAR can return a high-resolution three-dimensional map. A LiDAR typically includes different components: lasers, photodetectors, beam steering element and read-out integrated circuits (ROICs) with time-of-flight (ToF) capability to measure distance by illuminating a target and analyzing the reflected light.
While the adage is usually wielded in the context of changing habits for the better, it also applies here to Fortune’s annual Impact 20 list. Our annual Change the World list points to the giants of industry doing good with their dollars. By contrast, the Impact 20 points to relatively smaller venture-capital and private-equity-backed companies looking to improve lives as part of their business model—turning ESG and sustainability from buzzy terms into simple parts of everyday operations.
When it comes to buying a used phone on the internet, it’s hard to be sure that you’re getting what you paid for. That’s the problem that French startup Back Market set out to solve in 2014. An online vertical marketplace for refurbished electronics like smartphones, tablets, and laptops, Back Market aims to make high-quality technology more accessible and sustainable—a vital service, as manufacturers like Apple hone their focus on making new products rather than on supporting the resale market.
With the pandemic fading into the background, and as economies ramp up and social life reopens, the world is slowly beginning to readjust to a new normal. The one area where Covid-19 may have left an irreversible impact though is on consumer behavior . In 2020, as the pandemic raged on, consumers were forced to redefine how they work, interact and shop. Consumer behavioral patterns witnessed a dramatic change – e-commerce sales rose swiftly, sustainability became a bigger concern and digital communication took over everything. Now, in a survey conducted by Roland Berger, in collaboration with the research company Potloc, it has become clear that many of these patterns are here to stay. This will have important implications for businesses.
